Marketed from 1963 to 1969, Phantoms were produced in England by Jennings Musical Industries for the first 2 years before manufacturing was moved to EKO in Italy. English Phantoms are more sought after by collectors, however, the Italian basses represent a better opportunity for players to get basically the same Phantom at a great price.
Phantoms featured two single coil pickups, a rotary pickup selection switch and single volume and tone controls. The necks were bolt on maple with an ebony fretboard and featured an internal steel “T’ beam for added strength.
1957 Fender Musicmaster for sale on Craigslist
Very few affordable vintage 1950’s and 1960’s Fender guitars are available these days. One exception to this rule is the Fender Musicmaster. Here’s a great example of a 1957 Fender Musicmaster listed on Craigslist in the Lowell, MA area for $1,200. Click here to view the ad.
The original Musicmasters were 3/4 scale guitars intended for the student market. Nonetheless, they were built with the same Fender quality as the top of the line Stratocasters and Telecasters of the time and have been used by many professional guitarists over the years. Artists who’ve played Musicmasters include David Byrne, Rory Gallagher, Richard Lloyd, John McLaughlin, Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo, Liz Phair, Patti Smith, Tom Verlaine and Johnny Winter.
You have to wonder how long these guitars will remain at rock bottom vintage prices. Might be a good time to grab one before collectors and players discover these vintage Fender gems.
Kramer XKB-10 Vintage Bass
Kramer offered the XKB line of basses and the XKG series of guitars beginning in 1980. The XKB-10 basses had a wedge shaped body and were only produced in 1980 to 1981. You don’t find many of these for sale but here’s a nice example currently listed on the Austin, TX area Craigslist for $700. Click here to view the ad.
Other than the wedge shape, the most notable feature of these basses was the aluminum neck construction. The back of the neck contained two slots running the length of the neck that held wood inserts. The aluminum construction was intended to provide greater sustain while the wood inserts were intended to reduce the cold feel of the metal.
The Kramer aluminum neck era ran from 1976 to 1985 before the company changed over to more popular wood neck models.
1965 Magnatone Zephyr guitar for sale on Craigslist
Who was Magnatone? Mostly, they produced produced a line of great tube amplifiers, many of which are becoming more sought after today. Magnatone began producing guitars under the Dickensen name in the 1930’s before finally ceasing production in 1966. We noticed this Magnatone Zephyr listed for sale on the Boston, MA Craigslist for $600. Click here to view the ad.
According to the Magnatone catalog, Zephyrs were available in sunburst, blue, red, black or white, so it’s likely this particular guitar has been stripped and refinished to it’s natual color at some point. The design included a poplar body and a maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Pickups were DeArmond single coils.
Although it was considered a student guitar at the time, the Zephyr The X-5 Zephyr shared many of features found in Magnatone’s top of the range X-20 Typhoon and is certainly a good value in vintage guitars.
1969 Gibson J-50 for sale on Craigslist

Gibson officially introduced the J-50 guitar in 1947 as basically a natural finish version of their J-45 model, the J-45 model being one of their most popular and most played acoustic guitar of all time. In 1969, Gibson altered the original round shouldered design to a dreadnought design like this one.
Gibson ES 125 listed for sale on Craigslist
Guitarists looking for a vintage box might want to check out this 1962 Gibson ES-125 listed on Craigslist in the San Francisco Bay area for $1700. Click here to view the ad.
The ES-125 is a full body, arch top guitar that Gibson introduced in 1941 and produced until 1970. Hollow bodied Gibsons have been a favorite of jazz musicians over the years but have been known to be favored by guitarists in the rock genre including George Thorogood and Sheryl Crow.
